When Kevin Allwood was 20 years old, his girlfriend decided to put on a fashion show in their apartment. The bold, clean and flattering designs showcased were none other than Allwood’s creations – collections he had meticulously designed for his girlfriend over the years. This marked the pivotal moment when Allwood realized his true calling as a designer.
Early Life and Career
Allwood was born in Kingston, Jamaica. His family immigrated to Canada when he was 9 years old.
Growing up in Jamaica as a Rastafarian and vegetarian, Allwood developed a deep appreciation for nature, fostering his commitment to ethical practices in everything he does. “Exploiting animals is no longer a necessity for survival. It’s simply cruelty, and any form of cruelty will ultimately backfire. End of story,” says Allwood.
Years before Allwood gained notoriety as a trusted fashion designer across Canada, his creative freedom was somewhat stifled. As a student at the University of Ottawa pursuing a degree in computer hardware engineering, he recalls being conditioned to be meticulously detailed – where success hinged on precision. “Even the tips of the arrows were graded, how perfect they were. How you drew your numbers, the size, the height, everything was precise,” explains Allwood.
Engineering, he reflects, allows no room for interpretation. It disregards opinions or differing perspectives. Allwood attributes his accountability and decision-making skills to his schooling. Despite pursuing rigid studies, Allwood always had a genuine passion for the arts.
Allwood made his first mark on the fashion industry in 1986 when he founded his fashion brand NEVIK in Ottawa. Over the next few years, as he expanded his business, Allwood became a renowned designer in eastern Canada. In 2014, he launched his eponymous fashion house, producing pieces from his private atelier in Toronto.
Allwood’s creations embody a relaxed yet modern elegance, reflecting the beauty he sees in women. Beyond the bold designs, what resonates with many Canadians is the brand’s unwavering commitment to quality, never resorting to shortcuts. Part of Allwood’s commitment to ethical fashion is his adamant exclusion of fur and leather from his designs.
To fully understand the man behind the brand, you must grasp his ambition and versatility. In addition to fashion, Allwood produces music and runs a successful restaurant called KA Space. “I hesitate to call these pursuits ‘accomplishments’ because they don’t feel like achievements to me. It’s as if something is flowing through me. Nothing is merely a hobby; otherwise, it would be a waste of time,” reflects Allwood.

Fashion and Diversity
As a Black designer in a predominantly white industry, Allwood has built his brand by staying true to his vision, undeterred by societal biases. “Beauty transcends race. It’s a universal language that speaks to everyone,” he says.
Acknowledging racism’s existence, Allwood remains steadfast in his higher consciousness, ensuring it doesn’t influence his business. “Yes, racism exists, but I rise above it in my work.”
Within his brand, Allwood is transparent about his collaboration with the Ethical Fashion Initiative in Haiti and Africa. Working with indigenous artisans, Allwood strives to maintain cultural appreciation, a practice he believes many brands overlook.
“All brands benefit from collaborating with indigenous groups, but few acknowledge it. I choose to be transparent about it,” he says.
Influence and Legacy
Success isn’t measured solely by financial gain. For Allwood, “It’s about whether you’re aligned with your beliefs.” However, he cautions against letting authenticity become the sole driving force of a business. “If ‘ethical’ became a label for what we do, it could corrupt us to pursue ethics solely for profit, which would no longer be ethical.”
Allwood challenges fashion’s norms by rejecting exploitation and secrecy, advocating for transparency and ethical practices. His business reflects his personal ethos – integrity and ethics are inseparable. Allwood challenges us to act on our convictions, “We must each take responsibility and act on our beliefs to drive real change.”
More than a fashion designer, Allwood embodies compassion and authenticity, a testament to never forgetting one’s roots. “Authenticity is the foundation of true success. Without it, success is meaningless,” he concludes.
