This is our fourth year publishing BFC and we\u2019ve been laser-focused on three goals.<\/p><p class=\"none\">1. <strong>Ten new profiles<\/strong>: more interviews, more photographs, more intriguing details!<\/p><p class=\"none\">2. <strong>Halifax &amp; the East Coast <\/strong>We\u2019re thrilled to welcome Halifax to the BFC database. An intro from Holt Renfrew&#8217;s Kim Johnson led to Dr. Lynn Jones, an educator, community historian and activist who led me to Jessica Bowden and Kevin Carvey.<\/p><p class=\"none\"><strong>Plot twist<\/strong>: Our freelance journalist Daysha Loppie noted her family has lived in Halifax since the 1700s and discovered kinship ties with Jessica Bowden. It\u2019s a delightful coincidence that underscores why local research matters!<\/p><p class=\"none\">Their stories, and the networks that connected us, show how Black fashion history survives through community connections.<\/p><p class=\"none\">3. <strong>French language expansion<\/strong> All new 2025 profiles are published in English and French, and we\u2019re on track to make the site fully bilingual by spring 2026. We\u2019re working with skilled writers, editors and translators&#8211;Jacob Marion, Charlotte Poitier Bonneville&#8211; to make sure the voice and nuance of each story is preserved. Representing Canada properly means being bilingual and accessible, and we\u2019re committed to doing it right.<\/p><p class=\"none\">I\u2019m really proud of the work we did this year to uphold accuracy and journalistic standards. So much happened behind the scenes: digging, fact-checking, cross-referencing, copy editing, proofreading, and going the extra mile with our French translations.<\/p><p class=\"none\">It&#8217;s never all smooth sailing. For various reasons, five stories didn\u2019t make it to publication, which was truly disappointing. Still, the images, secondary sources, and community support we did receive made this year\u2019s profiles very rich and meaningful.<\/p><p class=\"none\">The truth is, BFC runs on community. Montreal, once hailed as Canada\u2019s style capital, has a rich fashion history waiting to be unveiled. We get a sense of this history from their revealing stories of <strong>models&nbsp;and muses<\/strong> like Don Johnson, Elayna Wallace, Charlen Francique, Lydia More, and Marilyn Jones to the trailblazing efforts of <strong>leaders and influencers<\/strong> Gemma Raeburn and Dale King, founders of Montreal Ebony Models, who influenced diversity into the modeling industry. As so this database was born: to <strong>preserve<\/strong>, <strong>document<\/strong>, and <strong>celebrate<\/strong> the contributions of these fashion pioneers. We have collected (and will continue to collect) biographical profiles, photographs, media clips, and relevant archival materials.<\/p>\n<p class=\"none\">Canada&#8217;s Black communities are often forgotten and overlooked by the mainstream, but here we wish to recognize those individuals and groups who silently struggled within systemic racism. The Black Fashion Canada Database is a platform for us to tell our own truths, to amplify the presence of lesser-known members of the Black fashion and beauty industry. Most of the profiles here are professionals who preceded \u2014 in fact, paved the way for \u2014 the digital age. In a world where an internet search has become the primary method of retrieving the past, their work threatens to be lost.
