Born in Kingston, Jamaica, Huie remembers glimpses of her time there: the warmth of a tropical island, the salty sweetness of the air and <\/span>the taste<\/span> of strawberry ice cream. When Huie was five,<\/span> her family<\/span> left Jamaica, land<\/span>ing<\/span> in Toronto and eventually settl<\/span>ing<\/span> in Scarborough, Ontario.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>
Huie\u2019s love for the arts started at a young age through flamboyant expressions and performances. From age 11, <\/span>she<\/span> would watch Sunday matinees on television with her mother and reenact grandiose scenes from 1940s films like<\/span> Philadelphia Story <\/span><\/i>and <\/span>Witness for the Prosecution<\/span><\/i>, mimicking the performances of Marlene Dietrich and Katherine Hepburn. Noticing her passion, <\/span>her<\/span> mother enrolled her in an after-school theatre program. \u201cThat was the beginning of this creative path,\u201d says Huie.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

The whole school seemed to audition, including Huie, <\/span>who<\/span> got <\/span>scouted<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>
Growing up, she often felt<\/span> \u201cawkward and gangly,\u201d and not \u201cvery graceful.\u201d Huie, who was 5-foot-10 and the tallest girl at school, was called \u201csticks\u201d because of her straight, skinny legs. As it happens, those features helped her get chosen for the course. \u201cWhat made me feel self-conscious was precisely what made me right for modelling,\u201d <\/span>she<\/span> notes.<\/span><\/p>
At Team One, Huie was taught how to pose and do makeup <\/span>by other models<\/span>, but it was the runway shows that <\/span>really<\/span> spoke to her. Sashaying down a runway <\/span>required<\/span> a performance that married <\/span>theatre with fashion<\/span>. Her first runway jobs were mall fashion shows at places like <\/span>the<\/span> Sheridan Centre <\/span>in Mississauga<\/span>, where she modelled clothing from the mall\u2019s retailers.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>
After the course, Huie signed with Kristen Models in the early <\/span>19<\/span>80s while still in high school. She remembers being exempt from final exams when she was booked to model for a major swimwear brand, Cole of California. The job was being shot on location in the Bahamas, which was a \u201cbig deal,\u201d Huie says. She moved on to model for Bookings for some time before landing at Judy Welch Agency.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>
When Huie signed with Judy Welch in the mid-1980s, she felt she had arrived at the place she was meant to be. She had walked by the agency on her way to Team One\u2019s courses all those years ago. \u201cI was passing the place that was going to be my favourite model home,\u201d reminisces Huie. The agency was once out of Welch\u2019s own home. \u201cWhen you walked through the door, everybody was all part of this agency\u2026 We were a family<\/span>.<\/span>\u201d In an industry where competitiveness runs deep, Huie stresses the importance of being in an agency where models feel supported.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

Around age 18, Welch sent Huie to Paris, France. \u201cIt was a part of my coming of age, becoming a woman<\/span>,<\/span> and it gave me a different life experience. It was pretty phenomenal for this little girl out of Jamaica,\u201d Huie reflects.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>
It was a \u201ccolossal achievement\u201d when she was booked for <\/span>a<\/span> United Colours of Benetton campaign in Paris. Huie\u2019s diverse background, Jamaican, Scottish, Chinese and English, made her confident about the booking. \u201cI am Benetton. This is me. You guys see it, right?\u201d she remembers thinking. When she booked it, she was \u201cover the moon.\u201d<\/span><\/p>
\u200bThere were half a dozen models on set that day, whom Huie describes as lovely. During the shoot, Huie had a \u201cpersonality clash\u201d with Oliverio Toscani, the photographer <\/span>and a<\/span> controversial figure in the advertising industry. \u201cToscani kept telling me to stand straight, which I was already doing<\/span>,<\/span> but what he wanted was for me to straighten my legs. I was so confused,\u201d <\/span>she recalls, thinking,<\/span> \u201cWhy are you shouting? I can\u2019t fix it if I don\u2019t understand [what you\u2019re asking].\u201d<\/span><\/p>
\u200bDespite the <\/span>misdirections<\/span>, Huie says it was a joy to be a part of <\/span>an<\/span> iconic advertising campaign. Seeing her ad in different Benetton stores was a proud moment for her and her family. To her surprise, her father <\/span>even<\/span> had the ad at home in a spare room. He had asked the store staff if he could have it <\/span>when the campaign was over<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>
In <\/span>a fashion capital like<\/span> Paris, Huie met icons <\/span>including<\/span> Tunisian couture designer Azzedine Ala\u00efa. \u201c<\/span>[Ala\u00efa]<\/span> was absolutely sweet. He\u2019s this tiny guy with his little doggies,\u201d she recalls fondly. Because <\/span>of<\/span> Huie<\/span>\u2019s larger<\/span> bustline, she wasn\u2019t <\/span>considered<\/span> versatile for certain shows. \u201cHe would say, \u201cI don\u2019t know what I can do with you, Miss Boobs,\u201d Huie laughs, imitating Ala\u00efa\u2019s Tunisian accent. \u201cHe wasn\u2019t being weird or anything\u2026 He thought it was beautiful,\u201d she clarifies.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>
African American designer Patrick Kelly was another fashion <\/span>legend<\/span> who left an impression on Huie. While his shows were over for <\/span>the<\/span> season when she met him, <\/span>she<\/span> remembers how he held both her hands, gave her two little Black baby dolls, and said, \u201cYou take these with you because I know you\u2019re gonna make a lot of money.\u201d The dolls were Kelly\u2019s signature accessory<\/span>,<\/span> which he would gift to clients and friends. <\/span><\/p>
After their meeting, Huie was elated. \u201cI just remember feeling like I had been blessed.\u201d She was excited that <\/span>they<\/span> might get to collaborate. \u201cBut by the next season, he was not with us anymore,\u201d <\/span>she<\/span> says. Kelly passed away<\/span> from AIDS related complications in<\/span> 1990, at the age of 35.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

When Huie started modelling, she would straighten her hair with chemical relaxers to fit <\/span>in with<\/span> industry preferences and stylists’ inability to style textured hair.<\/span> During her time a<\/span>t Bookings Modelling Agency, she wanted to take pictures with her natural hair after seeing multicultural models in <\/span>Elle magazine.<\/span> \u201cIt was all mine, full and curly, luscious, natural curls,\u201d Huie laughs. However, her enthusiasm wasn\u2019t reciprocated. \u201cIt was a fight for me to go with the curls,\u201d she admits.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>
This wouldn\u2019t be the only time Huie experienced pushback for her race. While in Paris, Huie was sent on a go-see by her agency. When <\/span>she<\/span> got there, <\/span>she could tell she wasn\u2019t what they expected from their disappointed expressions.<\/span> \u201cShe is too dark,\u201d the bookers <\/span>said<\/span> in French amongst themselves. They had mistaken Huie for another<\/span>,<\/span> more white-presenting Jamaican model with the same name.<\/span><\/p>
After that, modelling began to lose its appeal. She decided to pursue a <\/span>film career <\/span>but believed she couldn\u2019t be a model and an actor at the same time. Huie felt there was judgement from the film industry that questioned the dedication of a model-turned<\/span>–<\/span>actor.\u00a0 \u201cWhen I was 20, it felt like I couldn\u2019t do both. I thought, \u2018I have to quit modelling and focus on acting,\u2019\u201d she says. In what felt like an abrupt change, Huie moved from photoshoots to film sets.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>
In 1992, Huie attended Circle in the Square Theatre School in New York City. <\/span>She<\/span> starred in Canadian television shows <\/span>Liberty Street <\/span>(1995) and <\/span>G-Spot <\/span>(2005), and appeared in <\/span>worldwide hits<\/span> like<\/span> Grey\u2019s Anatomy<\/span>.<\/span><\/i> Huie played Margaret Washington in an episode of Netflix\u2019s limited series <\/span>Self-Made<\/span>, about beauty entrepreneur Madam C.J. Walker, a highlight in her acting career. \u201cGetting to play a historical figure who was so important to the empowerment of Black women and how we define beauty was amazing,\u201d Huie says.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>
Despite leaving the modelling world, she still found a connection to fashion through <\/span>her acting<\/span>. \u200bSophia Ellen Lofters, a <\/span>fellow <\/span>model now <\/span>working<\/span> in film production, immediately bonded with Huie as <\/span>young women<\/span> of colour at Judy Welch<\/span>\u2019s<\/span> a<\/span>gency. \u201cIt\u2019s just natural to feel stronger when you aren\u2019t the only one, rather than doing things alone,\u201d says Lofters.\u00a0 She recalls that Huie was always bubbly, full of energy and \u201cup for tricks.\u201d <\/span><\/p>
Lofters describes the two of them on the runway during a designer\u2019s show, holding hands, skipping and laughing hysterically. In tandem with Huie\u2019s playful side was <\/span>a sense of<\/span> professionalism <\/span>that<\/span> inspired Lofters. \u201cI\u2019m blown away that in this phase of her life, she continues to set her mind to something\u2026 she does the work and just keeps going.\u201d<\/span><\/p>
Huie, who <\/span>now<\/span> travels between Toronto and New York, became <\/span>a<\/span> certified <\/span>P<\/span>ilates instructor <\/span>before<\/span> returning to<\/span> the modelling world when a client invited her to walk a show. In a full-circle moment, she did the runway show, which soon led to a web campaign for a jewelry designer. <\/span>In 2025, <\/span>Huie walked in New York Fashion Week for the first time. \u201cAt this age, it\u2019s not do or die anymore,\u201d she says. \u201cI just get to enjoy it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>

Peggi Lepage, a friend <\/span>and model she also met during<\/span> her time at Judy Welch, now represents Huie as her scout and agent.
