Mascoll was born in Fall River, Nova Scotia, to Arthur and Gwendolyn Ash. She was the middle of three children, with an older and younger brother. <\/span>As a teenager in<\/span> the late 1950s, her family moved to Toronto, Ontario, settling on Markham Street. S<\/span>he attended<\/span> Central Technical School, <\/span>a high school<\/span> located at Bathurst and Lennox St, graduating in 1959.<\/span><\/p>
After graduating, Mascoll became a receptionist at Toronto Barber and Beauty Supply, <\/span>one of the longest-standing beauty businesses in the city<\/span>. <\/span>They had placed an ad in the newspaper for a position, and she came in to apply.<\/span> After just six months, <\/span>Mascoll<\/span> became assistant to the company\u2019s president, Nat Kaufman, <\/span>who spoke on her work ethic<\/span> in a tribute video, <\/span>\u201c<\/span>Angel: A Celebration of the Life of Beverly Mascoll<\/span><\/a>.\u201d<\/span><\/p>
\u201cShe did pricing<\/span>;<\/span> she worked at the counter. She did whatever was necessary. Beverly was not lazy. Beverly was willing to go out and do what she had to do, and the rest is history,\u201d says Kaufman in the interview.<\/span><\/p>
During her time at Toronto Barber and Beauty Supply, Mascoll noticed the lack of hair and beauty products catering to Black women. At the time, <\/span>these<\/span> hair-care products were scarce and often had to be imported from the United States. She saw that Black customers would come into the store looking for products suited <\/span>to<\/span> their hair <\/span>type<\/span>, but <\/span>often found <\/span>none.<\/span><\/p>
Taking<\/span> matters into her own hands, <\/span>Mascoll<\/span> turned to banks for <\/span>business<\/span> loans, but was denied. Despite the rejection, <\/span>she<\/span> did not relent<\/span>,<\/span> decid<\/span>ing<\/span> to invest her own $700 into <\/span>starting<\/span> her business. <\/span><\/p>
This marked the beginning of Beverly Mascoll Ltd, which would grow to become Mascoll\u2019s Beauty Supply, Canada\u2019s largest distributor of Black haircare and beauty products.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

In 1964, she<\/span> married Emerson Mascoll, <\/span>and in 1970,<\/span> they had a son, Eldon. <\/span>Shortly after, she took her business on the road, selling products from her car to hairdressers, turning each encounter into an opportunity to build a relationship. <\/span><\/p>
In an archival interview featured on <\/span>Caribbean Vibrations TV<\/span>,<\/span><\/a> Mascoll describes how she juggled <\/span>being an entrepreneur and a parent<\/span>. \u201cI had a new business and a new baby, and that was really tough going, because I set the baby on the front seat of the car and the products in the back, with a baby on one hand and products in the other. It\u2019s kind of crazy when I look back at it now,\u201d <\/span>she<\/span> recalled.<\/span><\/p>
Living up to her <\/span>\u2018go big or go home\u2019 <\/span>personality<\/span>, soon after <\/span>launching<\/span> her business, <\/span>Mascoll<\/span> flew to Chicago to make a deal with Johnson Products Company<\/span>. M<\/span>anufacturers of the largest Black hair care brands at the time, Ultra Sheen and Afro Sheen. Her pitch was direct and to the point<\/span>;<\/span> she wanted to become their exclusive Canadian distributor. She succeeded.<\/span><\/p>
In 1973, Mascoll opened her first retail location, Mascoll Beauty Supply, at 870 Bathurst Street <\/span>in Toronto<\/span>, around the block from the house where she grew up, and where her mother and father still resided. The store became a place where customers could find hair care products and other beauty essentials specifically made for the Black community. <\/span>Over the years, h<\/span>er company expanded to multiple locations throughout the <\/span>Greater Toronto Area<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>
Mascoll<\/span> operated <\/span>these<\/span> retail locations alongside her distribution business, getting her products on the shelves of <\/span>major<\/span> retailers including Shoppers Drug Mart, Eaton\u2019s, Simpson\u2019s, Boots and Hudson\u2019s Bay. Additionally, she brought Flori Roberts\u2019 Dermablend, a top makeup brand at the time, into Canada.<\/span><\/p>
In Cheryl Thompson\u2019s book, <\/span>Beauty in a Box: Detangling the Roots of Canada\u2019s Black Beauty Culture,<\/span><\/i> Thompson writes that in September 1971, Mascoll put an advertisement in <\/span>Contrast<\/span>, a Toronto-based newspaper that served Canada\u2019s Black and Caribbean voices. The ad detailed that Ultra Sheen was available <\/span>for<\/span> purchase through Mascoll, who was warehousing products at her home and delivering to customers herself.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>
\u201cBy December 1972, Mascoll\u2019s business incorporated as Mascoll Ltd, dubbing itself \u2018Canada\u2019s Largest Distributor of Back Beauty Products,\u2019 and placed another advertisement in Contrast with the tagline, \u2018We knew Black was beautiful long before it became popular.\u2019\u201d explains Thompson.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

Mascoll\u2019s son, Eldon, has become a protector of his mother\u2019s legacy<\/span>, recounting<\/span> the impact she had on the Black communities in Canada. <\/span>He<\/span> recalls the 1970s and <\/span>19<\/span>80s, when Saturdays on Bathurst St. <\/span>were<\/span> like a community gathering. \u201cThere were the beauty supply shops, record stores, Joyce\u2019s West Indies Food and the store my mom owned. I feel like that was a special time, and my mom played a big role in that,\u201d <\/span>he says<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>
Eldon explains, \u201cMy mother\u2019s business was more than a business because of the timing. Eldon describes his mother as a hands-on manager leading her business through successes and <\/span>setbacks<\/span>. \u201cAs a distributor, you\u2019d get excited when a major retailer<\/span>,<\/span> Simpsons, Shoppers<\/span>,<\/span> placed a $50,000 order. But the payment wouldn\u2019t come right away,\u201d he explains. \u201cI\u2019ve heard stories of her getting frustrated with retailers and confronting them, but that was the nature of the business. At a certain point, my mother decided she didn\u2019t want to deal with that anymore.\u201d<\/span><\/p>
In the end, she shifted her focus to her own retail stores, scaled back the distribution side, and expanded the retail part of the business she could control more directly.<\/span><\/p>
Her<\/span> commitment to the community paralleled her business drive. \u201cShe was a strong supporter of Camp Jumoke, a camp for children with Sickle Cell Anemia. She launched her own charitable organization, the Beverly Mascoll Community Foundation, with a mandate to support people from marginalized groups. She really believed in giving back, more with her time than anything else,\u201d <\/span>says Eldon.<\/span><\/p>
Mascoll\u2019s<\/span> best friend and fellow businesswoman, Gloria Shreve, <\/span>and her daughter Tracy,<\/span> were there from the beginning<\/span>, remembering<\/span> Mascoll\u2019s \u201cfirst class\u201d fashion shows. \u201cPeople talked about them forever. She was working with people like designer Winston Kong, and she had the top models from the U.S<\/span>.<\/span> and Canada in her shows,\u201d says Shreve.<\/span><\/p>
Her seminars would bring professionals in <\/span>beauty and hair care from all over.<\/span> \u201cThe same hairdressers that my mom started working with would participate in those seminars years later,\u201d says Eldon.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Eldon recalls his mother often <\/span>paraphrasing<\/span> Thomas Jefferson, \u201cIf you want something you\u2019ve never had before, you should be prepared to do something you\u2019ve never done before.\u201d<\/span><\/p>
This philosophy defined Mascoll\u2019s process. She knew that women and men in her community couldn\u2019t access products they needed, so she made it her job to do something about it. An astute businesswoman, she created opportunities for herself<\/span>, building<\/span> a career recognized with numerous awards, including the Order of Canada in 1998, one of the country\u2019s highest civilian honours.<\/span><\/p>
On May 16<\/span>,<\/span> 2001, Mascoll died from breast cancer at the age of 59, at Sunnybrook Hospital in Toronto. The following year, her stores closed, bringing her business to an end.<\/span><\/p>
Despite <\/span>this<\/span>, Mascoll\u2019s legacy lives on. She was <\/span>posthumously<\/span> awarded an honorary doctorate from Mount Saint Vincent University in Halifax, the very institution where her grandmother, Martha Ashe, once worked as a cleaner<\/span>,<\/span> often bring<\/span>ing<\/span> Mascoll along <\/span>during her childhood<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>
Outside the Bathurst subway station <\/span>in Toronto<\/span> is a plaque from Heritage Canada, in memory and honour of Mascoll and the legacy she created. Eager to build something meaningful, Mascoll became an inspirational example of success and determination for many.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
