Born in Toronto, <\/span>Carter<\/span> was raised in Etobicoke and Oakwood-St. Clair neighbourhoods, attending <\/span>the<\/span> Rosethorn Junior School, then transferring in grade five to McMurrich Junior Public School.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>
She grew up <\/span>learning the inside secrets of<\/span> the Canadian fashion industry <\/span>alongside her mother<\/span>. \u201cI have vivid memories of going through my mother<\/span>‘<\/span>s portfolio the same way other kids would flip through a picture book; my favourite book was my mom\u2019s portfolio!\u201d recalls Carter. \u201cI didn\u2019t know that not all kids had this experience until I was about five or six years old<\/span>.<\/span>\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>
When she was 12, <\/span>her<\/span> family moved to Jamaica, where she attended <\/span>Belair High Boarding School<\/span><\/a> and the all-girls <\/span>Mount Alvernia High School<\/span><\/a>. At 17, <\/span>Carter<\/span> returned to Canada, enrolling at Lorne Park Secondary School in Mississauga. There was a brief stint at Humber College <\/span>to study <\/span>addictions counselling <\/span>in 1991, but she quit within her first week.<\/span><\/p>
Instead of college or university,<\/span> her education came from the fashion world that she grew up <\/span>in<\/span>. Carter would frequently accompany her mother, a single parent at the time, to various fashion events. She has vivid memories of seasonal mall fashion shows, roam<\/span>ing<\/span> the mall until showtime, eagerly <\/span>waiting<\/span> and cheering from the end of the runway, clapping wildly for the models, many of whom <\/span>became close family friends.<\/span> When backstage, she\u2019d fashion a cozy little bed underneath the clothing racks for herself. \u201cSeeing boobs and briefs were commonplace for me<\/span>,<\/span>\u201d she laughs.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>
There were first-class train trips to Montreal, Canada\u2019s fashion capital in the <\/span>19<\/span>70s, <\/span>b<\/span>ut it wasn\u2019t all glamour; there were tough moments too. One vivid memory involves starting kindergarten while her mother was away working in Paris. \u201cIt wasn\u2019t always easy, and I\u2019m grateful for the support of my extended family<\/span>,<\/span>\u201d reflects Carter.<\/span><\/p>
She quickly realized fashion was a natural progression <\/span>from<\/span> her upbringing. \u201cI was with my mother on countless photoshoots, knew most of the photographers by name and was captivated by the transformation process of hair and makeup,\u201d explains Carter.\u00a0 So she followed in her mom\u2019s footsteps as a model.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>
Carter<\/span> launched her modelling career by signing with the Toronto agency Plus-<\/span>S<\/span>ized Models, <\/span>but quickly realized it wasn\u2019t a good fit. \u201cThere was a lot of favo<\/span>u<\/span>ritism, and we were getting deductions from our pay without explanation.\u201d At that time in Toronto, size inclusivity wasn\u2019t very popular<\/span>,<\/span> and she was openly critical about the lack of inclusivity, even writing published articles on the topic and appearing as a guest\u00a0on CTV\u2019s morning show. Looking for a better opportunity, Carter reached out to Elite Model Management in Chicago.\u00a0 At 21, she moved to <\/span>\u2018Chitown\u2019, <\/span>a city known then for its booming catalogue industry, especially <\/span>for plus-sized women.<\/span><\/p>
In reality, modelling wasn\u2019t lucrative enough, so she started teaching makeup at the Johnny Casablancas Modeling School. \u201cI wasn\u2019t even a pro makeup artist yet, but<\/span> all those years of watching my mom and models apply flawless makeup really paid off,\u201d <\/span>she says. \u201cTeaching was a way to make ends meet while waiting for modelling cheques.\u201d<\/span><\/p>
It was also a chance to get to know her father better, who was a Chicago native.<\/span> During her 18 months in the city, she gained deeper insight into race and identity in America and bonded with her father and grandfather.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>
Returning to Toronto, she worked at beauty counters for Fashion Fair, Lanc\u00f4me and even with Iman herself during the brand launch of Iman Cosmetics at Yorkdale <\/span>Shopping Centre<\/span>. \u201cEveryone should start at a counter,\u201d she insists. \u201cIt\u2019s the best training ground.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>
In 1997, Carter approached renowned makeup artist Barbara Alexander to <\/span>officially<\/span> learn the ropes. Alexander pointed her to Paul Langill, with whom <\/span>Carter<\/span> apprenticed for under a year. \u201cHe was brilliant<\/span>,<\/span> but the environment was toxic, and I knew I couldn\u2019t stay in it<\/span>,<\/span>\u201d she says. \u201cThat\u2019s when I realized the fashion world I loved as a child no longer existed,\u201d adds Carter. So she pivoted toward film and TV, where she found more space to thrive.<\/span><\/p>
That decision paid off. In film and television, Carter found not only stability but purpose, carving a path for Black Canadian women in the industry. Her career spans nearly 25 years, including a 14-year run as head of makeup on the culturally iconic show <\/span>Degrassi<\/em>, <\/span>which began airing<\/span> in October 2002.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

\u201cRacism is taught,\u201d states Carter. \u201cWe all say it, but we have to actually un-teach it, too.\u201d In the late <\/span>19<\/span>90s, she volunteered for two years with the Toronto Mayor\u2019s Committee on Community and Race Relations, as well as the Common Ground Women\u2019s Centre, both of which deeply shaped her lifelong commitment to service.<\/span><\/p>
\u201cWhat struck me,\u201d she recalls, \u201cwas being in rooms with people who weren\u2019t necessarily Black or people of colour, but who were actively working to dismantle racism. That\u2019s when I realized there\u2019s a real commitment. And that changes you.\u201d<\/span><\/p>
Despite her success, Carter hasn\u2019t been immune to racism in the industry. She\u2019s faced microaggressions and moments of outright dismissal from people assuming she was underqualified or only present to tick a diversity box.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>
Racism is unfortunately ever-present in the industry, and there is a fear of speaking out on experiences due to possible backlash. However, Carter is involved in the diversity makeup committee of IATSE 873. They try to ensure that members get opportunities in classes to become proficient in all skin tones. This initiative is committed to diversity, training and elevating the experience for all actors in the makeup trailer.<\/span><\/p>
The first change <\/span>Carter<\/span> thinks <\/span>is<\/span> necessary is to normalize <\/span>people of colour<\/span> working<\/span> in front of the <\/span>cameras<\/span> and behind the scenes. She hopes that her mentorship program on budgeting and negotiating will help BIPOC makeup artists understand the value they bring to the table, fostering a sense of hope for the future of the industry. <\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

In 2013, Carter was invited by the Network of Women in Growth to lead beauty and networking workshops in Ghana, West Africa. Her goal was to introduce women to the creative possibilities within the beauty industry while teaching practical, on-set skills like understanding call sheets, working with directors and covering <\/span>actors\u2019<\/span> tattoos. \u201cI emphasized that success doesn\u2019t require a traditional career path; creativity can also lead to financial independence,\u201d she explains.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>
Carter also included entrepreneurship into the training, encouraging the women to sell accessible products like eyeshadows or handmade shea butter items. The impact has been long<\/span>–<\/span>lasting<\/span>,<\/span> and she still receives updates from participants who have gone on to become photographers and filmmakers. For Carter, these stories are a powerful reminder that beauty is more than skin deep. It can be a gateway to confidence, income and lasting change.<\/span><\/p>
Following her impactful work in Ghana, Carter<\/span>\u2019<\/span>s career continue<\/span>s<\/span> to expand with purpose. Carter has helped pave a path for BIPOC artists in the film industry. She earned the<\/span> Canadian Screen Award for “Best Achievement in Makeup”<\/span><\/a> for her makeup artistry on the CBC show <\/span>Sort Of<\/span><\/a><\/em>, a sitcom built around being a younger millennial and the anxieties that go along with it. She worked <\/span>alongside<\/span> and supported showwriter<\/span> Bilal Baig<\/span><\/a> to be their most authentic self as the first Muslim Pakistani transgender person ever to have a show.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>
Carter is also known for her work as the owner of<\/span> Oshun Woman<\/span><\/a>, a Canadian registered not-for-profit organization, focusing on her flagship program,<\/span> emPowered by Beauty<\/span><\/a>, uplifting BIPOC and economically challenged women by teaching beauty industry skills.<\/span><\/p>
Today, nearly 25 years into her career, Carter is as committed as ever. Her vision isn\u2019t just to beautify faces; it\u2019s to elevate voices.
